Gear up for the New year with some of the top fitness trends for 2015. Learn about each, and get ideas to try them out for yourself!

  1. Bodyweight training
Be on the lookout in 2015 for workouts that use your own bodyweight to provide resistance for strength training exercises. Common bodyweight movements include lunges, planks, push-ups, pull-ups and sit-ups.  A major pro to bodyweight training is that it requires minimal (if any) equipment.

If you’re interested in bodyweight training, consider the Y’s TRX Suspension Training Trainer-Led Classes.

  2. Digital support
From online exercise videos, to wearable technology, to fitness apps—expect to continue seeing more integration between fitness and digital devices.
  3. Fitness for kids and older adults
Between the changing role of Physical Education classes in schools, and the aging Baby Boomer population, these are two audiences that will see focused fitness offerings in 2015.

At the YMCA, explore offerings for active older adults, and find targeted classes for kids, including:
    Zumba® Kids
    R.I.P.P.E.D.  for Kids
    Kids Fitness

  4. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
HIIT involves quick bursts of activity, and then a short period of rest. This type of workout is a good way to maximize the time you have for fitness. Whether you are looking for a Group Exercise class like Boot Camp or Tabata, or a Trainer-Led class like Circuit Works or YFIT—your local Y has something for you to try out the HIIT trend.
  5. Recovery
“Train hard, recover harder,” might be a mantra for 2015. Between an increased focused on strength training with bodyweight and high-intensity intervals, exercisers will need to make time for their bodies to recover. Recovery can include everything from restorative yoga to self-myofascial release using tools like foam rollers.
