Why the Y?

My personal journey deeply shapes my professional purpose. In November 1990, my family emigrated from Vietnam to the United States when I was just eight years old. I fondly remember celebrating my eighth birthday on the airplane during my first flight—a symbolic start to a new chapter.

Upon landing, my family was warmly welcomed by our sponsors and church community, who provided winter clothes, snow boots, snacks and toys. Their generosity and support helped us build a new life in a new country.

This experience instilled in me a deep belief in the power of community and belonging—values that align perfectly with the mission of the YMCA. Knowing the transformational impact of the Y’s programs and the intentional way they serve communities continues to fuel my passion for making a difference every day.
